Mercury Marine Introduces Technological Solutions to Control Engine Arrays of Outboard Boat Engines


Mercury Marine at the Miami International Boat Show introduced new technologies to control five and six engine arrays of the outboard engines in boats. With the significant rise in boating as the recreational activity and shift towards big vessels powered by the multiple large horsepower outboards, Mercury Marine is focusing on providing durable and high performance engines along with new technologies to enhance boating experience.

New system by Mercury provides support to five to six engine applications that offer better functionality in four major areas including route and heading features of electronic steering, digital throttle and shift control, joystick piloting for outboard technology, and active trim.

According to Kris Neff, VP- global category management and strategic planning at Mercury Marine, the company specifically developed new solutions to address unique properties of operating five and six engine arrays of the outboard engine on large boats. Significant research and development and software programming was done by the company to improve the performance of each engine in various throttle and maneuvers settings.

The company at Miami International Boat Show also introduced a new version of the supercharged V-6 400-hp Verado outboard for the production of boats. This new supercharged 2.6 liter outboard weighs around 668 pounds, which is its lightest configuration. The company also included digital throttle and shift that can control nearly 6 outboards along with twin levers using the company’s joystick piloting and shadowing technology for outboard engines. The engine has 3 years limited warranty and has a 70 watt alternator. It automatically increases idle rpm in order to increase the output and to match the charging demand.

With technological advancements in the outboard motor technology, the outboard engines have become more fuel efficient, lightweight, and reliable as compared to the traditional models of outboard engines. Manufacturers of outboard engines are also focusing on combining the right boat powered by the outboard engine in order to improve the boating experience. Recently, there has been a high preference by customers for small outboard engines along with the lightweight, hull-design and draft as all these factors together affect the boat performance. Manufacturers are also developing four stroke electronic fuel technology owing to the high efficiency and minimum consumption of fuel.

With new boat design and development of multi-engine pontoons, the demand for outboard engine with high horsepower has increased, especially for the use in sports boats. Manufacturers are also focusing on developing new outboard engines especially for winter where customer don’t need to use the anti-freeze in the cooling system and where outboard engine can flush out the water automatically. Meanwhile, increasing preference for personal watercrafts and rise in the boating as recreational activity are driving the demand for outboard engines.

The demand for outboard engines is significantly growing in Europe owing to the rise in boating as the recreational activity and presence of key market players in the region. Moreover, the fishing industry is also witnessing significant growth in Europe, thereby, driving the demand for outboard engines for fishing boats.
